The scene opens with the sounds of waves gently breaking over the bow of the surfaced U-Boat, disturbed by an incoming radio message followed swiftly by a sense of dread with the synthesiser bass. The melodic tremolo guitar line enters along the distorted rhythm guitars to create melancholic mood that embraces the vast openness of the sea accompanied by arpeggiated synth strings adding tension and a sense of breaking waves and blowing sea spray. All riding over the low synth bass of the long Atlantic swell.
The next movement contrasts starkly and reflects the deep and unfamiliar world beneath the waves, a slower, descending synth bass dives in steps to ever greater depths into an invisible world of darkness.
The interlude follows the rise from the depths with a string section that rises steadily in pitch and tension as the crew stare transfixed at the depth gauge awaiting their return to the living world.
The next scene heralds the burst of activity to start the main engines and breath fresh air again, the pace accelerates as the engines find their rhythm, simulated with synthesisers and accompanied by a bass guitar both combining to give a driving sense of forward momentum.
The guitars and strings then reenter along with the bass guitar and synthesiser diesel engine to reprise the opening theme that is invigorated with a sense of urgency and vigour as the U-Boat makes full speed running on the surface. Dissonant variations enter to highlight the claustrophobic confines of the vessel, its ungainly sea keeping and the fatigue and stress of the crew.
The piece culminates with a step up in pitch as the crew emerge to feel the fresh sea wind and refill themselves with life.
