How can scrupulosity OCD affect your relationship with food?

It’s not uncommon for those with scrupulosity OCD to experience altered eating for many different reasons. Here are a few ways that moral, religious, or other types of scrupulosity OCD can affect how you eat:

🍽 Pure thoughts and eating: Scrupulosity OCD can force suffers to either overeat or refrain from eating until they have perfect, clean thoughts. For example, someone may feel that they have to keep eating and eating, unable to stop until they’ve experienced a perfectly pure thought. Or, someone may feel they’re required to withhold food as a punishment until their thoughts are pure enough to deserve to eat.

🍽 Perfect prayers and eating: Religious Scrupulosity OCD can make individuals feel that have to say their prayers absolutely perfectly before they can start a meal. This may lead them to repeat the prayer over and over, only allowing themselves to eat when they get a just-right feeling that the prayer was said properly.

🍽 Scrupulosity and nutrition tracking: OCD can cause one to be scrupulous about eating a specific number of calories or nutritional macros with extreme perfectionism. Being even 1-2 calories off from their goal can lead to extreme guilt. *There can be overlap between OCD and eating disorders, however we're distinguishing this from the fear of gaining weight as is often found in eating disorders.
