Exploring An Old Abandoned Asylum With A DARK History

In today’s video we visit an old psychiatric hospital that will forever be linked to both tragedy and triumph, but would never overcome the horrific history that it so desperately tried to forget. The long-troubled state hospital first opened in 1870 as a lunatic asylum, but this one varied from the norm as it was the first institution in the country for treating quote “colored persons of the unsound mind” end quote.
With the patient population being African-American, the main problem for the hospital was that many of the institution policies, rules, and regulations were considered to have racist and discriminatory origins and that the hospital was specifically built to imprison African American people in the most nightmarish of conditions.
For example, “Religious excitement” was a common name for psychosis at the time and other reasoning, other than “freedom from slavery,” were thought to be caused by abortion, masturbation, homelessness, and even typhoid fever.
In the 1950s, the hospital was under scrutiny for severe overcrowding after it was reported that a single ward had 300 patients stacked in like sardines into one single room.
In 1980, the state hospital was again in hot water when a huge scandal was exposed, revealing that over 7,000 patients had been forcefully sterilized, triggering a major lawsuit.
Unfortunately the lawsuit did little to change things and almost as if pouring salt on already open wounds, in the 1990’s the facility was once again making headlines due to increasing reports of patient abuse and neglect coming forward. The allegations of inappropriate use of restraints on patients was found to have merit and this was finally the much needed catalyst for change that led to a huge institution policy overhaul which made significant improvements in the treatment of all hospital patients that still stand firm today.
And albeit as successful as it is, it should come as no surprise that due to all of the abuse and neglect, that many patients ended up dying during their residency at the hospital. It is for this same exact reason why many consider the hospital to be one of the most haunted places in America.
The psych hospital has long been shrouded in a veil of silence concerning its treatment of patients. Historical records and testimonies tell a grim narrative of neglect, mistreatment, and abuse that pervaded the institution for decades. Patients found themselves subjected to inhumane conditions, where the promise of care was overshadowed by cruelty.
