It has many interesting names like Peacock Plant, Zebra Plant, Rattlesnake Plant, Prayer Plant, herringbone plant etc but commonly still called as Calathea. In this video you will learn many varieties or species and also how to grow calathea properly and how to take care of calathea plants.

Calathea is a genus of plants belonging to the Marantaceae family. There are several dozen species in this genus. Native to the tropical Americas, many of the species are popular as pot plants due to their decorative leaves and, in some species, colorful inflorescences.

Few common species are:
Calathea lancifolia (Rattle snake plant):
It is an evergreen perennial, growing to 60–75 cm, with slender pale green leaves beautifully marked with various shades of green, wavy edges that magnify those shades, and green spots that resemble small leaves. Even their undersides are awesome looking, being with a reddish-purple shade.

Calathea ornata (also called variously striped, pin-stripe, or pin-stripe calathea):
The plant is known for its large leaves that have a distinctive pattern and effervescent colors. The leaf of the Pin-Stripe Calathea grows at the end of long stems that require the right care and location in order to continue looking as healthy as possible. If kept indoors the plant will not grow much larger than 2ft wide or 2ft tall. This is a plant that looks attractive indoors but it is also possible to keep outdoors under indirect sunlight. Due to its foliage, this is a superb plant to put among other plants that have large attractive foliage.

Calathea zebrina (zebra plant) is also an evergreen perennial can grow upto 1 m (3 ft 3 in). The long stalks carry beautiful striped elliptical leaves. The leaves are dark green above, dark red below, the spines, veins and margins etched in lime green.
Now will quickly run through the identification of few calathea species with some pictures and then talk about How to take care of these plants.


Now coming to the Care of Calathea plants:
Light:
No direct sunlight for Calathea's otherwise you will lose the markings. You need to provide shielding from the direct sunlight which will come overhead at some point of the day at these spots.
Watering:
Calathea plant demands to be moist at all times, but not always wet or water sitting in the pot at all times. This means regular small amounts of water during the growing seasons as soon as the surface starts to dry up.
Humidity:
humidity is really important to for a healthy and attractive looking Calathea. They all require high humidity and failure to provide this is one of the main causes of failure. You can also build your own humidity tray to provide the effect.
Fertlizer:
Drop few NPK cyrstals like NPK 20 20 20, every fortnight during the growing season or some vermicompost every fort night. Decomposed cowdung is also an alternative.
Repotting :
If growing well, look to repot every year or every other year during Spring or Summer. If you want to propagate your Calathea you can do this at repotting time. Its actually done by dividing large calatheas. Divide the plant by half (or into smaller pieces if you have a very large plant to start with) and pot each new section into it's own pot. – I shall make a separate video on repotting and propagation of calathea when I do it later.

One more thing regarding Calathea is Cleaning their leaves with a moist cloth if they become too dusty.
And coming to Flowering of calatheae:
The majority of Calathea's do not flower, or rather they do not flower indoors and this is because the conditions aren't suitable for them to do so. The exception to this is Calathea crocata.
