Today I want to show you the trio of overdrive pedals that has revolutionized my pedalboard – and my guitar tone – recently: it’s the Greer Lightspeed, Black Mountain Crunch Drive, and Gorilla Warfare!

Get the Lightspeed here:
Get the Black Mountain:
Get the Gorilla Warfare:

And no, before you ask, this video is not sponsored in any way whatsoever… it just kind of happened. I’ve always loved the transparent overdrive wonder that is the Lightspeed (it’s on over 100 videos on this channel for a reason!), so that was a no-brainer. The Gorilla Warfare is one of my very favorite Rat-type drives – it has the mythical LM308 chip, whatever difference that makes, but it also has a tone control that goes the right way (i.e. you turn it up to get more treble in your signal, not less!), which I always appreciate.

Then there’s the brand new Black Mountain Crunch Drive, which I was fortunate enough to acquire from a friend a few weeks ago, and which does incredible Marshall In A Box, vintage crunch goodness.

With these three pedals, I almost feel like I’ve got every overdrive base covered. OK, I know that lots of you would probably consider adding a Tube Screamer-type drive too, and I also know that I’ll be picking up my Revv G3 pedal if I ever need to do really tight modern metal sounds. But, for a supposedly never-ending process, this feels really good right now!

We’ll see how long it lasts, but for now, kick back and listen to the sounds on offer here – there’s a loop with my single coil-loaded Fender Telecaster and one with my humbucker-equipped Epiphone Les Paul – and tell me what you think. I use each pedal on its own, stack them, and also test to see how similar I can get all three to sound.

Let me know in the comments which of the pedals you think sounds best, and what other pedals I am missing!

Here’s the links to the various playing samples and info bits:

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals straight into my Hughes & Kettner Black Spirit 200 head. That went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That's it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to play the loop.

Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
