Storage is incredibly important in a van, and never more so than in a tiny camper!
I designed a storage box to sit over the wheel arch - covering some of my dodgy carpeting in the process - with an upward lifting lid.
I used pieces of pineboard to make the chest, because I liked the look of it, it’s lighter and cheaper for me to source than plywood and it came in useful sizes, meaning less cutting for me.
I cut out the front pieces and then the side pieces and used pocket holes to attach them together.
I then cut the top piece to length, split it in two and attached the thinner piece to the top of the box. Next I cut and attached the base and checked the fit in the van.
After making a few adjustments, I could attach the second piece of the lid via a long piano hinge to create the opening.
After plugging the pocket holes, sanding and varnishing, I could attach the box in the van with the same method as my bed - turnbuckles, connected to the van load rings!
I added strong magnets to stop the lid from banging when driving and a soft close attachment so it wouldn’t slam shut.
It’s great to have a bit of extra storage...and somewhere to put my feet up!
