We decided to order their steak sandwiches; we got the tenderloin steak sandwich, the rump steak sandwich and chorizo on a bun. It may seem strange to eat steak in a sandwich but this comes from the long tradition of food stands that used to line the waterfront, where people would come and eat grilled meat on a bun (a classic argentine snack) along the river on the weekends. This particular restaurant also started out as a food stand that grew and evolved with its loyal clientele.
If you stroll the 'costanera' on a weekend, you'll come across a few barbecue food stands though they aren't quite as prevalent as they used to be. Either way, if you visit Buenos Aires and you want to try great steaks in a casual setting outside the downtown core, this is a good place to check out!

Ultimate Buenos Aires Food Tour: Japanese Gardens, Legendary Steak Sandwiches & Sweet Farewells 🇦🇷🥩🌸
A Slow Start & Family Time in Buenos Aires 🌆👨👩👧👦
Our final day in Buenos Aires begins with a slow start, thanks to a big family reunion the night before—stories, laughter, and a raspy voice from talking non-stop! After some much-needed rest and throat lozenges, we head out for a day of sightseeing before our flight to Córdoba.
Japanese Gardens: A Calm Oasis in the City 🏯🌿
First stop is the stunning Japanese Gardens in the Palermo district. Seniors get in for free, so we happily cash in on that perk! The gardens are tranquil, with soft music playing, manicured paths, and inviting spots to relax or read. There’s even a tea house and sushi restaurant—tempting, but the steak sandwiches are calling.
The Steak Sandwich Debate: Sushi vs. Tradition 🥩🍣
Despite a playful push for sushi, tradition wins. “Offer an Argentine sushi in Buenos Aires and they’ll deport you!” my dad jokes. We’re on a mission to find the city’s best steak sandwiches—a bucket-list meal for any visitor to Buenos Aires.
Legendary Lunch at Los Platitos: Beef, Choripan & Chimichurri 🍔🔥
Our lunch destination is Los Platitos, a legendary spot along the waterfront famed for its massive portions and top-quality steak sandwiches. Here’s what we order:
Lomo Sandwich (Tenderloin): The leanest and most tender, my dad’s favorite.
Quadril Sandwich: A thick, juicy, and slightly fatty cut—waitress’s top pick!
Choripan: Classic Argentinian sausage, street-food style, slathered in chimichurri.
We cut the sandwiches in half (except dad, who keeps his whole!), try each, and debate our favorites. The consensus? These are elixirs from the gods—juicy, flavorful, and made even better by a generous helping of homemade chimichurri.
Dessert & Sweet Surprises: Pancakes with Dulce de Leche 🥞🍬
Even after a feast, I can’t resist the pancake with dulce de leche—a fluffy crepe loaded with warm, gooey Argentine caramel and topped with walnuts. One bite, and I’m in dessert heaven (and almost choking from over-enthusiasm). No skimping on portions here!
Siesta, Spanish Tortilla & a Sweet Sendoff 😴🍳
Stuffed and satisfied, we head back to the apartment for an epic siesta. Our walk plans dissolve in the midday heat, so we opt for a taxi and some downtime. Evening brings another foodie surprise: our Airbnb host, a former resident of Spain, gifts us a Spanish tortilla packed with eggs, potatoes, ham, and spicy red chorizo. It’s our farewell meal—and any leftovers are coming with us for tomorrow’s early flight!
Tips, Prices & Reflections 💸✨
Lunch at Los Platitos: Only $27 USD total for bread, sandwiches, potatoes, a full bottle of wine, and dessert. Incredible value for such quality.
Must-Try: Steak sandwiches (lomo, quadril, choripan) and homemade chimichurri—essential Buenos Aires experiences!
Where to Eat: Try both classic restaurants and street food carts along the waterfront.
Gardens: The Japanese Gardens are ideal for peaceful walks, but don’t skip local eats nearby.
