Commercial buildings and industrial plants account for 50% of our nation’s primary energy use and cost about $400 billion annually to power/operate. The Better Buildings Challenge is aimed at achieving the goal of doubling American energy productivity by 2030 while motivating corporate and public-sector leaders across the country to save energy through commitments and investments. More than 285 organizations are partnering with the Energy Department to achieve 20 percent portfolio-wide energy savings and share successful strategies that maximize efficiency over the next decade. Across the country, partners have shared energy data for more than 32,000 properties and are reporting energy savings of 20 percent or more at 4,500 properties, and 10 percent or more at 12,000 properties.

Night walks are good opportunities to find out where we have what I call leakage in your building.
None of our facilities be it Hilton or Whole Foods Market ever really truly shut down but there are some opportunities that you’ll see behind the scenes once the operations begin to slow down where there could be energy savings that wouldn’t otherwise be seen.
You should be able to let your building go to sleep a little bit, have some setbacks, take some controls versus running at full bore. So what we find is less is more, it’s that human touch and when you walk around, it’s amazing what you will see and what happens at midnight.
It’s to make sure that your team is doing what they’ve been instructed to do. Not all of our systems are automated and they still require a lot of input from the team to help make sure that you’re saving energy and doing the night walk helps make sure that those practices are happening.
