With the industrialization of the 19th century, the steelworks of England created the material that made innovative bridge designs possible. The construction methods tested there were exported to the Empire. One of the most impressive steel bridges, the Howrah Bridge, can be found in Calcutta. Its predecessor is the bridge over the Firth of Forth, not far from Edinburgh.
