The pirate's favorite weapon wasn't the cutlass, but an absurdly long flintlock musket. It was first adapted in the 1650s by a group of hunters on Tortuga, called the buccaneers. The musket was called Boucanìere, Fusil Boucanier, or in English: Buccaneer Gun.
