Stromae (Etterbeek, 12 March 1985), the stage name of Paul Van Haver, is a Belgian singer-songwriter of hip hop and electronic music. Stromae is of Belgian-Rwandan descent. The name Stromae is verlan for maestro. His songs are always in French. Stromae was born in Etterbeek as the son of a Belgian mother, Miranda Maria Van Haver, originally from Dendermonde and a Rwandan father, Pierre Rutare. His father was murdered in 1994 during a visit to family in the Rwandan genocide. Van Haver has only seen his father a few times in his life because of this. At the age of eleven, Van Haver was already interested in music and took lessons at the music academy of Jette, where he studied music history and learned to play the drums. In 2001, he became a rapper under the name Opmaestro, which he later changed to Stromae. Van Haver became known under this name. At the age of 18, he founded the rap group Suspicioun, together with rapper J.E.D.I. in Eichof. They made and produced the song and music video "Faut que t'arrête le Rap".... Later, J.E.D.I. decided to continue alone and leave the rap duo. In 2005, in order to pay for his studies at a private school, Van Haver worked part-time in the hotel industry, but in the meantime his school results deteriorated. It was only afterwards, when he enrolled at the Institut National de Radioélectricité et Cinématographie, that he released his first album "Juste un cerveau, un flow, un fond et un mic...". During his studies at the film school in Brussels, Stromae decided in 2007 to fully focus on his music career. This led to his debut EP Juste un cerveau, un flow, un fond et un mic …. In 2008, he composed several tracks for the album A l'Ombre du Show Business by French-Antillean rapper Kery James, which sold 75,000 copies. Stromae also produced the single "Cette Fois" by French singer Anggun that year. The song reached number four in the French charts. Stromae also contributed to other songs by Anggun and Melisse M, including "This Time and If I Take You." A year after the release of his second mixtape Mixture Elecstro, Stromae reached the highest regions of the charts in more than ten countries with his second single Alors on danse. The single became a number 1 hit in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Greece, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and in his home country Belgium. In the spring of 2010, "Alors on danse" was released in the rest of Europe. In Germany, the single sold 300,000 copies and worldwide, one and a half million copies were sold. Early December 2010, the VRT announced that Stromae had received six nominations for the MIAs 2010. He had the most nominations, including the one for the most important MIA, the "Hit of the Year", with Alors on danse. On 7 January, Stromae indeed became the winner of the MIA for "Hit of the Year" and also won a second MIA, namely for "Best Breakthrough". Alors on danse was also awarded as the best national song in Humo's Pop Poll. In 2011, Stromae won a European Border Breakers Award. The European Border Breakers Awards are prizes that are awarded annually to ten young promising European artists who made their successful debut outside their own country's borders the year before. On 19 August 2013, his second album √ (Racine carrée) was released. The album includes the four singles: Papaoutai, Formidable, Tous les mêmes and Ta fête. In France, he sold over a million copies of it and received three awards for it at the "Victoire de la musique" (French version of the Grammys). In Flanders, his singles Formidable and Papaoutai went double platinum and his single Tous les mêmes platinum. The album itself went seven times platinum (approximately 140,000 albums sold). Stromae was the big winner at the MIAs 2013 with eight awards, including the most important award for "Hit of the year" with Formidable. In March 2014, his song Ta fête was designated the official song of the Red Devils for the World Cup in Brazil. On 1 April of that year, he launched his own clothing brand Mosaert. On 9 June, he performed at Pinkpop.
