Channeling indie-rock gods Pixies and Modest Mouse, the group leapfrogged their peers in both stylistic grandeur and lyrical maturity. Frontman Jesse Lacey delivers intensely personal lyrics in both a tortured wail and quiet, somber cry over tracks that are longer, more complex and fully realized. “It’s teen angst blown up to literally biblical proportions,” Pitchfork wrote of the album, “resonating like no emo band before or since to outcasts in Sunday school and high school.”
