Eddie VanHalen is best known for his legendary guitar skills, but he was also a tinkerer. In 1985 he filed a patent with the US Patent office for a "musical instrument support", basically a bracket that swings out from the back of the guitar, which allows the player to perform fretboard "tapping" hands free. Eddie can be seen in several photos with an early prototype of the device made out of MDF, then, with the actual device outlined in the patent documents made out of clear Plexi glass. The use of which seemed short lived. The patent for this device expired in 2005 and a memorabilia collector by the name of Eric Kuck auctioned off the original plans for the devices featured in multiple patents that Eddie filed. This goes to show that not only was Eddie a talented guitar player, he also had a curious imagination and visualized solutions to uncommon problems
