➡️ The Donga trees on the hillside are heavy with fruit — their yellow glow covering nearly every branch. With the help of my cousin’s brother (an expert at climbing trees like a monkey), I collected a full basket. From my garden, I added ripe star fruits, batoko plums, guavas, cherries, langsats, mangosteen, mango, and rose apples. Everything was chopped and tossed with salt, chili, pepper, and tempered dried baby shrimp to make a vibrant, spicy tropical fruit pickle. The aroma alone was irresistible — I had to sneak a bite before it was done.
Back in the kitchen, my brother kept asking for welithalapa, a traditional Sri Lankan sweet that holds special meaning in our family. My grandmother was known as “Welithalapa Amma” for her unmatched recipe. As I prepared it on the floor like she once did, mixing pieces of pittu with jaggery and love, I could almost hear her praise. It turned out delicious — just like hers.
For the main meal, I made creamy coconut milk curry with Thalapath fish stew and set the table with fresh banana, homemade welithalapa, spicy lunumiris, and perfectly cooked egg hoppers. The flavors, colors, and smells created a feast that brought everyone together.
➡️ The next day, I plucked ripened Kochchi chilies and made a tangy new sauce combining Kochchi with Donga juice — perfect as a spread on baked bread with a butter and curry leaf mixture. Spicy, bold, and full of character, this sauce might be your next favorite!
This video is filled with santol fruit recipes, tropical fruit pickle, Sri Lankan sweets, egg hoppers, chili sauces, and family meals made with traditional village cooking techniques and garden-fresh ingredients.
