In the early hours of 2 May 1997, ITN filmed at counting centres across the country as a number of senior Conservative ministers lost their seats amid the New Labour landslide. Labour candidate Tony Colman replaced David Mellor in Putney; in Stirling, Anne McGuire unseated Michael Forsyth; Labour newcomer Chris Leslie replaced Marcus Fox as MP for Shipley; and in Tatton Neil Hamilton was defeated by independent Martin Bell. Malcolm Rifkind lost out to Labour’s Lynda Clark in Edinburgh Pentlands; In Bristol West, Labour’s Valerie Davey took William Waldegrave’s seat; in Braintree, cabinet minister Tony Newton was replaced by Labour’s Alan Hurst; and, most famously, Defence Secretary Michael Portillo unexpectedly lost his seat to Labour’s Stephen Twigg.
