The rain slants hard, pixelating the night in bursts of neon static. It drums on the polycarbonate awnings, rattling through the steel latticework of elevated monorails that hum like distant ghosts. Below, the streets are a liquid mirror, smeared with the fractured light of kanji ads, their holographic edges bleeding across chrome-skinned taxis and swarms of disposable umbrellas. The city’s pulse is low and relentless, a bassline of distant machinery, synth chirps, and the hiss of unseen hydraulics.

Skyscrapers loom like forgotten gods, their glass faces streaked with rain and the glow of a million AR overlays, slicing the atmosphere with data streams too fast for the naked eye. Billboards glitch mid-pitch, momentarily collapsing into grids of raw code before snapping back with desperate clarity. "SEAMLESS YOU," they scream in English and kanji, while smaller feeds scroll product reviews for cybernetic eyes or implant-grade wetware upgrades.

In the lower levels, where the light doesn’t reach, the rain mixes with grime, trickling into the maze of alleys and sub-basements that hum with the pulse of forgotten servers and the faint whine of cooling fans. Street vendors hawk synth-food under sputtering LEDs, their voices muffled by the rain and the hiss of steam vents, while the occasional drone skitters past, its navigation laser slicing a cold red arc through the damp air.

You feel the city watching. Its fractured rhythms creep into your skin, into your wet boots and damp coat, like an algorithm processing your presence. Somewhere deeper in the maze, a junk trader’s stall flickers with cracked screens and second-hand implants. The smell of ozone, soy grease, and unwashed plastic clings to everything. Overhead, the monorail slides by, its undercarriage sparking faint blue, momentarily lighting the shadows where the rain falls slow and thick.

It’s Tokyo, sure, but Tokyo burned through the mirror years ago. What’s left is this, an endless simulation of itself—a wet, breathing grid, half flesh, half code, dissolving in the rain.
