A successor of greats like Art Blakey and Philly Joe Jones, Willie Jones III is a true master of elegant rhythmic playing. The Californian drummer made a major contribution to the evolution of swing, performing with the likes of Arturo Sandoval and Horace Silver. There’s a certain soul dimension to his playing, at least in the original sense of the word, that the brilliant fifty-something-year-old cultivated alongside his family, and more specifically through contact with his father, pianist Willie Jones. Performing in autumn 2023 at the Maison de la Culture in Clermont-Ferrand, France, Willie Jones III makes a touching tribute to the late Roy Hargrove, the multi-talented American trumpet player. Among some of the most memorable moments in Hargrove’s rich career are his early hard bop days and The RH Factor, an impeccable funk-rap group led by artists D'Angelo and Common.

Backed by a breathtaking quintet with Justin Robinson on saxophone, Giveton Gelin on trumpet, Shedrick Mitchell on piano and Barry Hall on double bass, the percussionist gracefully kicks off the set with “Public Eye,” a track penned by the Texan musician in 1991. To follow is the sublime and aptly named “Style,” a track introduced by the luscious sound of the saxophone, and the group finishes the set off by captivating the audience with “Strasbourg/St. Denis,” an urban-toned sequence that naturally embodies the American jazzmen’s passion for the City of Light.
