So on the weekend I unfortunately lost one of my brand new custom built FPV Drones to the sea. I was flying along the rocks at Malin Head in Ireland, when out of nowhere a seagull flew right into the drone, knocking it out of the sky and into the sea along my with GoPro 12 🥲 This was only my 3rd flight with this drone. I’d test flown it in a field and this was its first trip to the coast to capture some cinematic fpv footage.
The whole thing happened so fast I didn’t even have time to react. The drone was travelling at around 60mph when the seagull suddenly came into frame. I’m not sure if it tried to attack the drone or it was a completely freak collision. Either way, it didn’t turn out well for either of us 😔
The drone was a brand new custom built 8.5inch long range quad that I’d built with really high end parts including a DJI O3 au, @tmotorfpv F100 motors & a 65A Skystars stack.
Unfortunately there was no recovery as the drone had likely ended up in the sea as I immediately lost telemetry as around a second after the crash.
This is my 3rd drone I’ve completely lost in over 5 years of flying FPV. Flying by the sea is inherently risky with splashing waves and of course often recovery in the event of a crash. But a bird strike was never something I pictured happening you know - FPV drones are much faster than seagulls and the chances of colliding with one in such a big open area are very slim. It was an unfortunate event 🥲🚁
Slowly over the next month or so I will rebuild the drone and continue my review of it. It was a beautiful quad and flew really well. Be sure to drop a follow to stay tuned to the rebuild story. I’d really appreciate it 🙏
