The Dyatlov Pass Incident refers to the mysterious and brutal deaths of nine student ski hikers in 1959 in the northern Urals and is considered one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in Russian history. Investigations concluded that the hikers slashed their tents from the inside on the night of Feb. 2 and fled despite freezing temperatures lightly clad and sometimes barefoot.
Some bodies showed signs of a struggle, others had broken bones and internal injuries. Two victims were missing their eyes, and another corpse had no tongue. In addition, the clothing of some victims was radioactively contaminated, which made the already mysterious case even more puzzling.
Soviet investigators described the deaths as the result of a "compelling natural force“.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident continues to engage and fascinate decades later. Although an avalanche is considered the most likely cause of the incident, countless theories surround the case - from animal attacks, weather phenomena, intelligence and military actions, to UFOs and murder by native mountain peoples.
