Description:
Discover the mysterious "virtual border" in the Malay Archipelago that no land animal, bird, or fish can cross. This invisible line separates two distinct ecozones—the Indomalayan ecozone and the Australasian ecozone—creating a unique biological boundary. On one side, you'll find tigers, elephants, and rhinos; on the other, kangaroos, dingoes, and koalas. Even though some islands are just 34 kilometers apart, species from either side have never successfully crossed and adapted to the different ecosystems. Learn how this fascinating natural divide shapes the biodiversity of the region and what makes it so unique!

Transcript:
There is a virtual border, crossing right through the Malay Archipelago that no land animal, bird, or fish can cross. It starts from the eastern tip of the Indonesian island of Bali and ends south of the Philippines. This line separates the Indomalayan ecozone from the Australasian ecozone.
West of the line, you'll find tigers, elephants, and rhinos, while east of the line, there are kangaroos, dingoes, and koalas. Although the distance between the islands is relatively short—just 34 kilometers between Bali and Lombok—no animal from either side has crossed this boundary and managed to establish a population on the other side.
Scientists refer to this as a biological boundary. And there are many others on our planet, but this one is the most evident one. Animals on either side are unable to adapt to the different ecosystems across the line. Even fish and birds rarely cross, as they are adapted only to their specific ecozones.
