Farewell to the queen: The Canadian capital of Ottawa held a national event on Monday, Sept. 19 in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Sept. 8 at 96. The event included a parade through the capital city's downtown, a gun salute, a fly-past and an invitation-only service.

Invitees to the ceremony included government officials, dignitaries and representatives of organizations with whom Her Majesty had a close connection, such as charities and military regiments.

The national commemorative ceremony began with a military parade, consisting of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). A gun salute of one round per year of life lived by the Queen was conducted during the memorial parade. The 10-day period of mourning across the country will last until sunset on the day of the funeral. Approximately 225 military members are set to be involved in the memorial parade ahead of the commemorative ceremony.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, attended the overseas service for Britain's longest-reigning monarch in London's Westminster Abbey. He was accompanied by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and her husband, Whit Fraser, along with former governors general Michaëlle Jean and David Johnston.

Elizabeth sat on the British throne for 70 years. Her son, King Charles III, is now head of state not only for the United Kingdom and Canada, but 13 other nations as well.
