This series investigates the heroic acts of a small group of foreigners who witnessed one of the twentieth century’s forgotten massacres; The Rape of Nanjing. In December 1937, the Imperial Japanese Army invaded and occupied the capital city of the Republic of China. The Chinese government, and most of the army had already fled the city and it was largely defenceless. But this did nothing to deter the Japanese; and a bloodbath followed. It is estimated that up to 300,000 people died in the first few weeks of the occupation alone and 20,000 women were sexually assaulted.
