Please don’t take this personally

(If you’re stuck with this + tons of other sneaky OCD/anxiety traps, DM me or comment the word STUCK below for a link to my next live event)

When you say “I can’t”, like “I can’t stop ruminating” or “I can’t not wash my hands” - it implies a literal impossibility.

It implies that the solution or way “out” doesn’t even exist. Your brain quite literally just shuts off from any openmindedness towards a solution BECAUSE YOU’RE IMPLYING YOU CAN’T.

I get that it feels like you can’t, but you can - you just:

1. Don’t want to. And that’s fine. Just own that you can and don’t want to. We don’t want to do what we know we should do all the time. We are human.
2. Don’t know how. And this is also fine. You can learn. You can figure it out. And then make moves from there. But then say you don’t know how, not that you can’t.
3. Don’t understand why you need to. This is a legitimate thing, if you don’t understand why you need to or if you even can in the first place, that will hold you back. But then SAY. THAT.
4. It’s just hard. And.. that’s ok but it’s not the same as “I can’t”.

Say what you need to say but don’t say that you can. Whatever you “can’t” do, it’s not a physical impossibility. Me growing 8 inches tomorrow is a physical impossibility. You resisting washing your hands or resisting checking that thing is very, very, very uncomfortable and you can’t even see yet how you could even get there, BUT YOU CAN DO IT.

DM me or comment the word STUCK to get a link to my next live event on Sept 4 where we’ll talk about this and more.

PS Please don’t take this out of context and tell me something that you actually can’t do, like how you can’t have something because of an allergy or you can’t take a certain medication because your doctor told you not to. This is about resisting rituals and making changes as it relates specifically to OCD and anxiety. There is only so much nuance I can capture in a 6 second reel and a big ass caption.

Sincerely, your anxiety’s least favorite therapist ❤️🥰
