Chichén Itzá, located in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, is one of the most significant and well-known archaeological sites of the Maya civilization, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. The site is famous for El Castillo, a large step pyramid also known as the Temple of Kukulcán, which was built over an earlier pyramid and is aligned with the equinoxes, creating a shadow effect of a serpent descending the steps. Other notable structures include the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors, and the Sacred Cenote, all contributing to an understanding of Mayan culture, astronomy, and architecture.
