When Motown began in 1958, it had just two male groups, The Miracles and The Satintones. The Satintones were James Ellis, Chico Leverette, Robert Bateman, and Sonny Sanders. After a couple of years, lead singer James Ellis left and was replaced by Vernon Williams. We recorded them all in 1989, when we got all five members back together, no exceptions. Sonny Sanders had become a legendary arranger, having made many million selling records including all Jackie Wilson's 1960's hits on Brunswick. As soon as they all met up again in Detroit, in July 1989, they were rushed onto a TV show to sing "Shake Me Wake Me", before they'd even had proper time to greet each other after the passing of about twenty eight years. We cut five songs on The Satintones, "Perfect Combination", "It's A Rough World", "I Can't Get Next To You", "Half A Man", and "Shake Me Wake Me". We also cut solo records with both Chico Leverette and James Ellis. We mixed "It's A Rough World" with the late Clive Scott in the year 2000, twenty two years ago, to give it a real Blackpool Mecca feel to the music. I believe that James Ellis might still be alone but all of the other four are now dead. They were wonderful classy guys, all legends in their own right.
