Pelosi Wins $10 Million for the New Central Subway

Washington, D.C. -- Today, the House Appropriations Committee passed the fiscal year 2004 Transportation Appropriations bill which includes funding for several projects requested by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, including the Third Street Light Rail/New Central Subway. The bill must now be passed by the full House of Representatives.

“I am pleased to announce that the Appropriations Committee has allocated $10 million for the New Central Subway, which will continue the rail line now under construction along Third Street all the way to Chinatown,” said Pelosi. “This vital new transit line will connect the long-isolated neighborhoods of Bayview/Hunters Point and Visitacion Valley with the business and cultural centers of downtown. It will promote commerce and economic development, improve mobility, and reduce air pollution for all of San Francisco.”

Pelosi also obtained funding for the following essential projects:

BART extension to the San Francisco International Airport, requested jointly by the entire Bay Area Congressional Delegation -- $100 million.

Seismic retrofits for the Golden Gate Bridge, requested jointly with Rep. Lynn Woolsey -- $5 million

Security improvements, alternative fuel buses, and street improvements for the San Francisco Muni bus system -- $4 million

Research funding for CALSTART/WestStart projects regarding Rapid Bus Transit, clean fuels and advanced propulsion systems, requested jointly with other members -- $3.25 million

Road work relating to Phase II of the Third Street Light Rail project -- $2.5 million

A new integrated radio and wireless data communications system for San Francisco Muni -- $1.5 million

New and improved trails and bikeways in the Presidio -- $1.5 million


City College of San Francisco Transportation Academy, which trains students for transportation careers with a focus on new environmentally-beneficial transportation technologies -- $300,000 #Jared
