Today we're taking you on an off-grid cabin getaway in Ontario, Canada. After spending the past 3+ months in self-isolation, we are finally venturing out again, this time staying close to home and getting to know our own backyard. Canada is home to insurmountable beauty, and over the coming months, we’re going to help you discover some unusual accommodations and fun nature escapes.
Our first summer adventure was an off-grid cabin stay in Schomberg, Ontario where we spent a few days enjoying tiny house living close to nature. I found this tiny home cabin listed on AirBnB and it's located in Jecara Farms. The best part is that it's less than 1 hour from Toronto, which makes it the perfect weekend escape!

In this video, we'll give you the full off-grid cabin tour, and let me tell you, the place is cute! We stayed in the Bear Cabin which comes with its own private pond, but they have three different cabins to choose from depending on the size of your group. This one right here is the one we stayed in: 🏡 🏡

Because the cabins are completely off-grid, that means there is no WiFi (nor did I have phone signal). There is no actual kitchen, so all the cooking is done on the barbecue, and all the washing up is done using a 5-gallon water container. There is a compost toilet in the cabin (I promise it does not smell!), and while there is no sink or shower, there is a place to set up a camp shower bag. Everything in the cabins is powered by solar and wind energy. Some may say it's roughing it, but sometimes it's nice to go back to basics!

We had a wonderful time staying in this off-grid cabin and we spent our time hiking, canoeing, roasting marshmallows around the fire, and reading books. It was such a wonderful getaway, especially after having spent the past few months in lockdown.

We hope you enjoy this video and we'll see you soon with some more tiny homes and unique accommodations as we continue to explore close to home. If you have any suggestions of places you'd like to see us explore here in Canada, let us know in the comments below. We'll be focusing on Ontario for now, but will start branching off to nearby provinces as things slowly begin to open up again.

Happy travels!

🏕️ Canada Off-Grid Cabin Getaway: Our First Post-Quarantine Adventure! 🇨🇦🌲

🏡 Cabin Tour: Simple, Sustainable, Cozy

Our off-grid cabin is a one-room, eco-friendly retreat powered by solar and wind energy. We walk you through:

A quaint dining area with a rustic picnic table

Open shelves with all the cooking essentials (pots, pans, wine glasses—even a cheese grater!)

A compact living space with comfy couches and quirky artwork that brings back travel memories

Board games and books for rainy days (and friendly Monopoly competition!)

A double bed that’s snug and perfect for two

Composting toilet and “natural” bush options—plus a fun look at the eco-friendly system

No running water, no shower—but several swimmable ponds to keep cool and clean!

🍽️ Off-Grid Cooking: BBQ, Chili Dogs, and S’mores

Without a full kitchen, we keep meals simple. Dinner is classic camp food: chili dogs with German sausages, baked beans, cheese, salsa, and toasted buns, cooked on a gas BBQ. Dessert? S’mores made over a campfire, with some gooey (slightly melted!) Hershey’s chocolate. We share a laugh over the mess, quarantine beards, and marshmallows stuck everywhere.

🌞 Cabin Life: Oatmeal Breakfast & Off-Grid Routines

Mornings start with maple brown sugar oatmeal, bananas, grapes, and cherries. We make use of a basic “kitchen” with boiled water, a wash-up station with biodegradable soap, and plenty of sunscreen (because this Canadian ginger burns fast!). The summer heat is intense—so we nap, snack, and keep things low-key when it’s hottest.

🥾 Nature Activities: Hiking, Mosquitoes, and More

We venture to Mono Cliffs Provincial Park for a hike. The forest is beautiful, but the mosquitoes are ferocious! We decide it’s better suited for autumn when the foliage turns magical. Back at the cabin, we explore more trails, spot wildlife (bunnies, turtles, fireflies, and even coyotes), and enjoy the peace of nature—even if we’re scratching mosquito bites nonstop.

🏊‍♂️ Cooling Off & Cabin Downtime

With the heatwave in full force, we consider a dip in the pond to cool off, then prep simple nachos with melted cheese and salsa for dinner. Camping-style means eating right out of the pan—why make extra dishes?

🐰 Wildlife & Cabin Reflections

Two days fly by filled with animal sightings, summer storms, and simple pleasures. We reflect on the joy of getting outdoors after months indoors and how much more we appreciate travel—even local adventures.
