On 26 December 1967, ITN's Robert Hargreaves reported on East Berlin's decision to withhold Christmas border passes from West Berliners, thereby preventing families from temporarily reuniting for the Christmas period. The break in tradition aligned with a broader hardening of East German policy towards its Western neighbour, best exemplified in the lethal additions made to Berlin Wall. Foot patrols, attack dogs, machine gun nests, and booby traps now ran the length of the deadly killing zone on the eastern side of the wall, designed to deter and prevent would-be refugees from escaping to the West.
