People often ask me if I have any words of advice for mental health professionals looking to share their work on social media. I do.
We've been training researchers and others who work in science communication on using social media for years. In fact, it's what we elves specialize in.
In 2011, when we started The Mental Elf, we joined Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube to share our blogs, our podcasts, and our videos all about mental health research.
Twitter quickly became our most vibrant community, with diverse voices from people with lived experience, practitioners, clinicians, policy makers, researchers.
Between 2015 and 2019, Twitter became an amazing space to talk about mental health, and we built lots of lasting relationships and partnerships.
Thank you, Twitter, and everybody who joined in. All the tweet chats, the live events, the mental health jukeboxes. It was a really exciting time. And I think we all learned lots from each other,
But of course, all good things evolve. In the last few years, we've seen a real drop in engagement on Twitter and an increase in negative interactions over positive conversations.
So at The Mental Elf, we've made the decision to focus on platforms that foster kinder, supportive communities.
From now on, you'll find us mainly on Bluesky, LinkedIn, as well as YouTube and Instagram. Twitter will be less of a focus for us.
We're really excited to recreate the vibrant and welcoming community that we used to have on Twitter.
The momentum on Blue Sky and LinkedIn is really strong with thousands of people moving over and establishing a presence.
So, if you're interested in mental health research and conversations about getting it where it needs to be, at the frontline, join us now and let's build something amazing again, together.
