What is Ferrofluid?Ferrofluid is a liquid that is attracted to the poles of a magnet. They are colloidal liquids made of nanoscale ferromagnetic, or ferrimagnetic, particles suspended in a carrier fluid (usually an organic solvent or water). Each magnetic particle is thoroughly coated with a surfactant to inhibit clumping.
While the exact chemistry behind ferrofluid remains shrouded, the basic idea is that magnetic forces are used to suspend the magnetic particles in carrier fluids like water or vegetable oil. While ferrofluids are little more than pretty liquid decorations, they can be used to keep magnetic fluids from clinging to the walls of tubes, and they’re perfect for demonstrations.
Ferrofluids are fluids that contain magnetic particles, and are therefore attracted to magnets. This phenomenon is used in a variety of applications, ranging from tubes of ferrofluids to be used to remove dust from computer hard drives, to sculptures that are meant to be viewed by the public.
With a magnetic fluid, scientists can make magnets that look like they're pulling things to them! You can make them with a liquid and a magnet, and as you move them around, the fluid will look as though it's pulling things to it. This activity is very simple to do, and you can use it as a fun science activity, or you can do it as a cool demonstration for a school assembly!
