Ariana Grande has opened up about rumours that she is ‘secretly married’ to her Wicked co-star, Cynthia Erivo. The 31 year old American actress and singer revealed in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, that she is aware of the speculation that she and Cynthia are more than friends. Speculation was originally sparked during the emotional press tour that accompanied the release of Wicked: Part One, directed by Jon M. Chu. Ariana and Cynthia went viral for their tear-filled interviews, often seen holding each other’s hands (and fingers).
Despite them publicly dating other people, speculation soon arose that the two co-stars were romantically involved. Ariana has directly addressed these claims, joking that: “people think we’re secretly married.”
She then went on to discuss the femslash ‘Gelphie’ ship, which is a term used by fans to describe a romantic relationship between the characters Glinda and Elphaba from Wicked. Some fans argue that Gelphie actually originated from subtext in the original novel that inspired the musical and film. Ariana admits she has seen “some Gelphie stuff” online, referring to the internet’s vast collection of fan fiction and art explicitly celebrating the characters' sapphic love.
She added, “I wish I could unsee some things. I mean, wow, I had a feeling, but I didn’t know it would be on this scale or this graphic.” Ariana has been vocal about her support for the queer undertones of Wicked, often posting content on her social media that support the Gelphie universe.
