On a hot summer day, Agha Ruhollah went to Muhammad’s mother’s house to check on Agha Rashid. Since Rashid had left home, he had been extremely worried and felt that if he didn’t help him, it might be too late. But Agha Ruhollah knew very well that Muhammad’s mother was a strong-willed and stubborn woman, who still held a grudge against him because of a dark past; the time she had thrown Ruhollah in prison.
When he entered the house, he noticed that Muhammad’s mother was looking at him with a cold and angry look. “Why did you come to my house?” she said sharply. Ruhollah felt that the atmosphere in the house was extremely tense and that every word he said could lead to a further rupture.
Agha Ruhollah calmly tried to convince her: “Mother Muhammad, please listen to me for just a moment. I am looking for Rashid and maybe you know something about him.” But Muhammad’s mother replied angrily: “Never! You have no right to come here. I have not forgotten you!”
A war was raging in Agha Ruhollah’s heart. He knew that Muhammad’s mother had suffered a lot and that her resentment stemmed from her. But this resentment could end at the cost of his friend’s life. At the same time, his instincts told him that he had to reveal the truth and that he could not be influenced by her angry behavior.
A heavy silence fell over the air and Ruhollah felt that he had to take action somehow. He shouted with all his might: “I don’t want to hurt you! But if you don’t help me, I don’t know what will happen to Rashid!” At this moment, Ruhollah realized that emotions can sometimes lead to dangerous places.
His words were effective and, perhaps for a moment, Muhammad’s mother came out of her defensiveness. She sank into thought and made a soft sound. Can these two men truly help each other, or will each be torn by their own past?
