Whether we are talking about a remake, a lookalike or distant cousin, Industrial Designers frequently reference and repurpose ideas when designing new products. We'll discuss the different ways Industrial Designers copy and one instance when it's strongly encouraged to steal. I use the words copy and steal interchangeably. Steal comes from the Picasso quote “ Good Artist’s borrow, Great Artist’s steal” but Picasso wasn’t the first artist to say it. T.S Elliot said “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.” (1920), and Igor Stravinsky had his own take (A good composer does not imitate; he steals,”) More recently, Bansky claimed the statement and literally carved the words in stone.
