Since the fall of the Hasina regime on August 5, 2024, Bangladesh has witnessed an outpouring of public expression.
Walls across the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka, and other cities are now filled with powerful graffiti mainly painted by young people, broadly known as ‘Gen Z’.
For years, the people’s voices were suppressed. Criticising the government was risky and often met with harsh consequences.
During the immediate past regime of the Awami League government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, dissent was dangerous.
Many people who raised dissenting voices were tortured, detained, jailed or even faced deaths in custody or enforced disappearances.
With the regime's fall, the people of Bangladesh began speaking their minds, venting their anger and expressing their visions for the country's future on the city walls.
Graffiti has become a new and vibrant form of protest and expression.
These artworks capture the public’s hopes, frustrations, grief, and dreams for the future.
In protest against the discrimination in government job opportunities, the students began a protest in July.
The demonstrations turned violent as the protesting students were badly beaten, and shot to death in the streets.
In protest, masses of people took to the streets, demanding a change.
Ultimately, they achieved the goal as the regime fell on August 5.
Now, people from all walks of life—students, activists, ordinary citizens—are reclaiming their right to speak.
Walls across the country have become their canvas.
These graffiti pieces are diverse in style and message.
Some honour the heroes of the recent uprising. Others commemorate lives lost in the struggle.
Many envision a democratic future, full of hope and inclusivity.
Calligraphy and elaborate paintings bear messages of resilience, sacrifice, and unity.
In Dhaka, powerful images remind passers-by of the collective struggle that led to this new era.
Some paintings promote religious unity. One depicts a mosque, temple, church, and pagoda with the words, ‘We are all one.’
Some celebrate Bengali identity, while others call for recognition of ethnic diversity in the country.
It reflects the resilience of the Bangladeshi people and their determination to reclaim their voices.
The walls of Bangladesh tell a powerful story. And for the first time in years, it’s a story written by the people.
Analysts say this wave of artistic expression reveals a shared desire for democracy and freedom of thought.
