Beyond buildings, saving energy helps the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy achieve operational efficiency. In this Bonus Scene of the Better Buildings Challenge SWAP (), brought to you by the U.S. Department of Energy, hear from Assistant Secretary Miranda Ballentine, Assistant Secretary Dennis McGinn, Lt. General Michelle Johnson, and Vice Admiral Ted Carter talk about why energy efficiency is important for the mission of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy.

Commercial buildings and industrial plants account for 50% of our nation’s primary energy use and cost about $400 billion annually to power/operate. The Better Buildings Challenge is aimed at achieving the goal of doubling American energy productivity by 2030 while motivating corporate and public-sector leaders across the country to save energy through commitments and investments. More than 310 organizations are partnering with the Energy Department to achieve 20 percent portfolio-wide energy savings and share successful strategies that maximize efficiency over the next decade. Across all 50 states, partners have shared energy data for more than 34,000 properties and are reporting energy savings of 20 percent or more at 5,500 properties, and 10 percent or more at 12,600 properties.

The Air Force flies, fights and winds from our bases, not only overseas, but here in the United States as well. A steady flow of electricity to those bases is as important to our mission as a steady flow of jet fuel to our aircraft.

The primary job of the United States Navy is to patrol the waterways of the world, to protect those sea lines of communication, to keep trade flowing – so, the ability for us to be able to use energy efficiently, and be able to stay out on those sea lanes for longer, faster when we need it is the most vital thing we do in the United States Navy.

If we’re energy efficient, we squeeze more mission capability and war-fighting capability out of every barrel of fuel or every kilowatt hour of electricity.

Every kilowatt hour that we can save through energy efficiency is cleaner, it’s more cost effective and improves our resiliency.

This resiliency of power and energy isn’t just about saving money as well. We don’t want anyone to be able to put us at risk. If someone could pull the plug on us, can we keep functioning as an air force and as an academy?

And, this is all about keeping mission capability focused on the enemy and not just worrying about fuel all the time.

We think we’re doing things pretty darn well and I bet the Navy thinks they’re doing things pretty darn well and we can exchange those best practices and do things even better.

It’s really, really important for everybody in the energy-warrior culture to, uh, look for those good ideas, to share our best practices, because we are so energy aware and we’re so dependent on energy for mission success; we just want to get better at it every day.
