For the 20th anniversary, Audioslave’s ‘Out of Exile’ returns pressed on a 2LP “Silver Wave” color disc, limited to 3,000 copies globally. This deluxe edition comes with a gatefold jacket for the first time, printed with a matte finish and chrome foil logo, along with 4 exclusive lithographs including photos by Sean Ricigliano, and 5 bonus tracks never before pressed on vinyl.
Made up of three-quarters of rap-rock titans Rage Against the Machine and backed by Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell’s vocals which run the gamut from a plaintive to primal, Audioslave’s debut sold 4 million copies and even picked up a Grammy nomination. But their 2005 follow-up found the band evolving immensely, becoming a fully formed group, whose whole was far greater than the sum of its parts.
The mellifluous melodicism of “Be Yourself” bumps up against Tom Morello’s guitar histrionics on “Doesn’t Remind Me”, supported with a pummeling musical bed contrasting perfectly with Cornell’s smooth delivery on the title track. The album, one of the decade’s signature rock records, debuted at Number One on the Billboard 200 and went platinum. But just as important, it signaled the creative, eclectic apex of a beloved supergroup that ended far too early.
