Last week, the world saw New Zealand’s parliament suspended after Māori MPs performed a haka, led by Hana Rawhiti, in protest against a bill which aims to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi. The treaty, signed 184 years ago, ensured the protection of Māori rights and self-determination, and its reinterpretation threatens this.
Mass protests and hīkois since have seen thousands of indigenous people marching the streets of New Zealand, while an alternative form of protest has taken form in AROHA’s latest track, Let Her Rip.
This week, we land in Aotearoa with Pulotu Underworld, a global collective celebrating Pacific music, culture and artistry, to present a project that champions an all-Māori lineup, as well as a series of workshops which are soon to be announced.
Let Her Rip is a free download, and is available on AROHA’s Bandcamp.
