With our time in Argentina winding down and a flight to catch out of Buenos Aires, we decided to spend our last two days in the country at an estancia! An estancia is a large tract of land used for farming or raising cattle. Nowadays, a lot of former working estancias have turned to tourism and welcome overnight guests. We had previously spent the day at a few different estancias, but this was our first time spending the night.

Our 2 days at Estancia Puesto Viejo proved to be very relaxing. We enjoyed some bike rides around the property, got lost in their labyrinth, went for a horseback ride, had some great meals, and just relaxed and enjoyed the countryside.

It was different from what we expected (we've recently spent a lot of time at working estancias and this was the complete opposite!), but I think this is a nice option for anyone who wants to spend a few relaxing days in the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

We stayed at Estancia Puesto Viejo, which is roughly 40 minutes from Ezeiza International Airport.

Welcome to Puesto Viejo Estancia

Good morning from our tranquil retreat, Puesto Viejo (“Old Post”) Estancia in the flatlands of Buenos Aires province.

Swapped Córdoba’s sierras for the endless pampas prairie—perfect for a peaceful finale before city chaos.

Full-Board Country Escape 🍽️

All-inclusive meals: breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea (“merienda”) and dinner served in the historic main building.

On-site activities: horseback riding, guided labyrinth, cycling, polo lessons and even yoga after breakfast.

Cycling the 220-Acre Grounds 🚲

Borrowed simple, no-gear bikes to tour tree-lined avenues and grazing fields.

Enjoyed symmetrically planted poplars framing endless horizons—ideal for a leisurely pedal.

Lost (and Found) in the Labyrinth 🌿

Inspired by Leeds Castle, this two-metre-high hedge maze has over 200 metres of winding paths.

After several wrong turns, we reached the central viewing tower—no cake reward this time, but epic bragging rights!

Gourmet Lunch Highlights 🍝

Starter: Swiss-chard & egg tart; fried mozzarella sticks with house-made BBQ sauce.

Entrée: Hearty pasta to balance the endless Argentine asados.

Dessert: Classic tiramisu & silky caramel flan—finished with dulce de leche drizzle.

Polo Spectacular 🐎

Spotted polo players thundering across the field—first-hand view of gaucho equestrian skill.

Tried zooming in on our camera for better shots—next time, bring a tele lens!

Afternoon Horse Trek 🐴

Saddle-up for a gentle ride around the estancia—ideal for beginners, though not as epic as our Córdoba mountain trek.

Met friendly polo horses & stable dogs; rooms named after famous steeds (Mattie, Tango, etc.).

Early Morning Departure ✈️

Alarm at 3:30 AM for our flight from Ezeiza (EZE) to Toronto via Bogotá.

Reflected on logistics: estancia’s proximity to the airport made departure a breeze.

Final Thoughts & Tips 💭

Pros: Relaxing countryside vibe, historic ranch atmosphere, full-board convenience.

Cons: Minimal riding compared to multi-day treks; some guides less engaging.

Tip: Several estancias lie within 30 min of EZE—perfect for a quick rural escape pre-flight.

Souvenirs & Next Stops 🎁

Loaded up on alfajores, Malbec and artisanal goods for family back home.

Quick Bogotá layover: best coconut-limeade ever and a gourmet burger fix.
