Gospel: Matthew 2:13-18
When the magi had departed, behold, an Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, “Rise, take the boy and his mother, and flee into Egypt. Remain there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the boy to destroy him.” Joseph got up, took the boy and his mother by night, and withdrew into Egypt. He remained there until the death of Herod, to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt, I called my son.”

When Herod saw that he had been deceived by the Magi, he became very angry. He sent orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its surrounding areas, from two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the Magi. Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

“A voice was heard in Ramah, great weeping and mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted, because they were no more.”

Reflection: How are you being called to protect and care for the most vulnerable in your life, just as Saint Joseph protected Jesus?

Prayer: Lord, give me insight, wisdom and strength so that I can work in accord with Your will to protect the most innocent from the evils of this world. May I never cower in the face of evil, and may I always fulfill my duty to protect those entrusted to my care. Saint Joseph, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You.
