Cher's legendary career and high-profile relationships are both key subjects in her newly released book, "Cher: The Memoir, Part One." But in a recent conversation, she revealed a romantic regret—the one that got away, who surprisingly wasn’t mentioned in her memoir.
During an interview at New York City's Temple Emanu-El on November 20, with friend and former NBC News correspondent Harry Smith, Cher was asked a question that wasn’t covered in the book. "Was there ever a man you felt like you should’ve taken a chance on?" Smith teased.
The crowd waited eagerly, and Cher surprised everyone by answering, “Michael McDonald.” The singer confessed that his voice alone would have been enough to make her swoon. She reminisced about the time she sang background vocals for the Doobie Brothers just to share the stage with McDonald, hinting that the connection was more about admiration than anything romantic.
Smith then playfully asked why men always seem to fall for her. Before Cher could respond, the audience jumped in with shouts of admiration, praising her charisma and timeless beauty.
Cher's love life has been a whirlwind journey, one that’s detailed in her memoir. She married Sonny Bono, only to divorce in 1975, then quickly wed rocker Gregg Allman days after her first divorce was finalized. Their relationship faced many obstacles, including Allman’s struggles with addiction, leading to their split a few years later. She also had famous romances with music executive David Geffen and Kiss’s Gene Simmons. Her memoir revisits these past loves, offering new insights and reflections.
More recently, Cher has been linked to music executive Alexander “AE” Edwards, proving that love, in its many forms, remains a constant in her life. When pressed further by Smith, Cher was hesitant to reveal too much, laughingly describing herself as “a really good girlfriend,” crediting her dedication to monogamy and her unique sense of humor for her relationship successes.
A notable influence on Cher’s approach to relationships was her first husband, Sonny Bono, who, according to Cher, was strict about her interactions with other men. One anecdote from her memoir recalls a time when Bono burned her tennis clothes after hearing she had chatted with men at a post-tennis party, an incident that left her furious.
When she finally decided to leave Bono, Cher sought advice from Lucille Ball, who famously divorced her husband and TV partner, Desi Arnaz. Ball’s straightforward response was, “F--- him, you’re the one with the talent.”
Cher also let slip a humorous detail during the interview—due to her dyslexia, she can't remember her own address or phone number. Instead, her phone lists her contact information under the name “Lucille Ball,” a small but telling nod to the friend who once gave her the courage to move on from Sonny.
As she continues to reflect on her journey in the entertainment world and beyond, Cher’s honesty, wit, and undeniable charm prove why she remains an enduring icon, both on stage and off.
