The Western Balkans route has been hailed as a success story for cracking down on illegal migration, with Frontex reporting a 78 per cent drop in irregular border crossings last year. But experts say that the decrease isn’t quite as dramatic as trumpeted.
As the Telegraph found, the route remains active, particularly along the Serbia-Hungary border.
The Telegraph's Senior Foreign Correspondent, Sophia Yan, went to the EU border to track the people using the route, and the smugglers helping them.
