The Democratic Republic of Congo and the M23 rebel group have initiated direct peace talks after months of violent clashes in eastern Congo. Facilitated by the African Union and now mediated by Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé, these negotiations are taking place in Doha, Qatar, marking a significant move towards resolving the long-standing crisis. The talks follow M23’s recent withdrawal from the strategic town of Walikale, a gesture seen as a goodwill signal. We are joined by Maurice Carney, Executive Director of Friends of the Congo, from Washington, DC, to discuss the background and prospects of these crucial peace efforts.
