This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Hyundai Santa Fe versus the Kia Sorento SUVs. Although these two SUVs share the same platform and have the same width, the Sorento is longer. Its wheelbase is 50mm longer and overall length 15mm longer, which is not surprising, as it is a 6/7-seater compared to the 5-seater Santa Fe. The Hyundai offers a little more front legroom, 2nd row legroom is equal and cargo volume is bigger in the Sorento to second row seats. They both have a 2.5L turbo 4-cylinder engine with an 8 speed dual clutch transmission, 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft torque. The base model engine is a 2L 4-cylinder engine also with an 8 speed automatic transmission, 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. On the Sorento in Canada, only AWD is available, no FWD but both are available in the US. The Santa Fe offers both in Canada and the US.The Santa Fe and Sorrento in the US have a hybrid option. The Santa Fe in Canada has this engine available as well but not the Sorrento yet. It’s a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with a 6 speed automatic paired with a 1.49 kWh battery pack with an electric motor. Total output is 226 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Santa Fe has a smooth, comfortable and refined drive with plenty of power in this turbo engine. The turning radius is quite good and it takes corners with ease. There was never a time that we felt there was a lack of power with this SUV. We also tested the same turbo engine in the Kia Sorento. It handles really well in the city, there’s plenty of power. But, once you get it on the highway, we found the mid range power when passing is not as good, the engine runs out of breath. The steering is impressive, it’s responsive and the vehicle is nimble and agile with a good turning radius. Although these two SUVs share the same platform and have the same width, the Sorento is longer. Its wheelbase is 50mm longer and overall length 15mm longer, which is not surprising, as it is a 6/7-seater compared to the 5-seater Santa Fe. The Santa Fe in Flame Red has a modern and elegant exterior with a large grille and chrome accents throughout. It shares a resemblance to the Hyundai Palisade. This top trim comes with LED headlight, taillights, a power liftgate and 19” wheels, 18” wheels are standard. The Sorento in Sapphire Blue has a boxy, rugged look to it, very different from the previous model Some say it has a very domestic looking exterior like the Ford Explorer or Dodge Journey although the front grille is all Kia with the Tiger Face design. The Sorento comes standard with LED headlights and 17” wheels but 18-20 inch wheels are available.
