
During the Vietnam War the United States, desperate to gain an edge against Viet Cong insurgents, concocted a special operation: "Operation Wandering Souls". The US and their South Vietnamese allies blasted eerie sounds of wailing ghosts across the Vietnamese jungles, hoping to scare the Viet Cong into abandoning their fight and returning home.
But of course, these weren't actual ghosts, just cleverly edited audio recordings of Vietnamese people saying freaky things. Of course, the Viet Cong quickly realized what was happening, although the Americans like to say that they're "no evidence the operation didn't work". That being said, the sounds definitely would've kept Viet Cong soldier awake and frustrated at night, potentially affecting their combat readiness.
Either way it's an example of the lengths countries will go to in war, and a silly example of an American psychological warfare operation.
