We knew there was a problem with the floor in over the basement in our new house in France but had thought we would get away with jacking it up and sliding in a new joist or two. After taking up all the floorboards and inspecting it from below it was clear that all the joists had rotted out and there had been some wood supports added that were sitting on the ground to stop it all caving in. Taking it all out and starting from scratch was the only option and in the long run should work out much easier and after watching @escapetoruralfrance putting in many, many joists I figured I'd give it a go. There are options for concrete joist and block systems but I've never used them so going with timber again should last another 80 or 90 years! I'm doing work to the ground levels and drainage outside and adding heating for the first time which should mean the walls will be a lot dryer inside and the pockets housing the joists are not wet anymore. There is another floor in the back hallway that will need replacing which is smaller but does have a stairs sitting on it so that will be a little more complicated I think.
