The relationship between the Russian Empire and the U.S. shifted through the years.

Russia stayed neutral during the American Revolution and even backed the U.S. during the War of 1812. Things were pretty friendly in the mid-1800s, especially when Russia sold Alaska to the U.S. in 1867. By the early 1900s, the vibe between them was more cautious. At the start of WWI, Russia joined the Allied Powers, which complicated things further with the U.S.
