Both chicks enjoyed some sweet relaxation time yesterday morning in the center of the nest with Mama Jackie on the front porch keeping watch. She announced his arrival as……Papa Shadow came flying in with fists full of fluff, apparently having figured out how to make plenty of shade in the nest bowl. First, he set the fluff down while he put a small stick on top of the bigger chick. Fortunately, the big chick was apparently too busy sleeping to notice. But Shadow quickly realized, as he always does with sticks, that it was not quite in the proper place and moved it to the side of the chick.
Then Shadow piled the new bunch of fluff right on top of the smaller chick, completely covering it. That took care of the chick needing shade. And it ended up being a good thing that the chick was hidden since Shadow had to shout at some intruder passing by. In the meantime, Jackie knew the chicks were in good talons and left them in dad’s care.
A short time later, while Shadow was busy rearranging fluff, Bigger Chick bopped dad in the side with its amazingly long wing--maybe little payback for the stick placed on it. 😊
After Shadow pulled off some of the fluff, the smaller chick sorted its way out from under the rest to stand up beside dad. Bigger chick joined him and both chicks got to enjoy sitting in the shade umbrella of a loving daddy guardian.
Later, Shadow snuggled over his two sleeping babies, protecting them from both the sun and the ravens. While he enjoyed his daddyhood, Jackie arrived with a fish. She announced it loudly, of course. And after a long discussion between them about whose turn it was to feed the chicks, both Jackie and Shadow shouted away those raven neighbors from the area. As usual, Jackie won the argument about whose turn it was to feed.
During their feedings, Bigger Chick showed off its primary and secondary wing feathers, starting to sprout. Both of these adorable fluff balls are beautifully healthy as they grow and develop at lightning speed.
