Hailing from the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, Baba Commandant and the Mandingo Band are a formidable force within capital city Ouagadougou’s underground music scene. Baba Commandant, the band’s enigmatic lead singer (Mamadou Sanou) plays the ngoni, a six-stringed instrument used by traditional hunters of the Burkina Faso region. The group’s Afrobeat style fuses modernity and heritage with a sensibility steeped in the Mandingue traditions of their ancestral legacy. Their sound is influenced by the likes of Fela Kuti, King Sunny Adé, and Malian growler Moussa Doumbia.
