India and Pakistan appear to be on the verge of another major conflict. Following a brutal attack on tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir that left almost 30 dead, and which India has blamed on Pakistan, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes on targets in Pakistan. But, what happens next? Is that it? Or will Pakistan now retaliate? If so, will things escalate? And what would this mean given that both countries have nuclear weapons?
More to the point, this latest crisis underscores the central role that Kashmir plays in fuelling tensions between the two countries. But after eighty years, can this issue be resolved? If so, how? And, if not, what is it likely to mean for any efforts to build a more stable and prosperous South Asia?
