The Native Tongues represent an expansion within hip hop - a new musical sub-genre with a new focus. It’s an incredibly influential period of music history. It's also some of best music ever made.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
At 1:05 - "Nixon's War on Drugs" - this is larger than just one President, as the "War on Drugs" was started in 1971 with Nixon (Controlled Substances Act, creating the DEA) but was expanded by Reagan (zero tolerance policies and increases penalties, resulting in an increase of non-violent drug offenders (predominantly Black Men) behind bars). This is a very large issue that spans decades and we're still seeing the results of today. While Reagan expanded the War on Drugs and was President in 1988 when Straight Outta Compton was released, the War on Drugs is larger than just him, so I chose the wording of "Nixon's War on Drugs"
At 10:19 - I misspoke - instead of Pharrell, I mean Kanye, who produced John Legend's "Get Lifted"
